honoring saint john's legacy
"While concerning oneself with the salvation of men's souls, one needs to remember that people also have bodily needs which declare their presence.  One cannot preach the Gospel without manifesting love in one's deeds."

Eis polla eti, Despota!
remembering Saint John's
dedication to his flock
"Whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; and whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant."
- Saint John of Shanghai and San Francisco, quoting Matthew 20:26-27
Reunion of Saint John's Altar Servers
Those who served him in Life.  At 1994 Canonization.  And Now.
Saint John is remembered for many virtues, not least of which is his devoted attention to his flock and, especially, his altar servers.

What a wonderful opportunity this 30th Anniversary is to gather Saint John's altar servers for a reunion in his memory:
- altar boys who served with Saint John during his lifetime,
- the many who served during his canonization services in July 1994, and
- altar servers presently serving regularly before his holy relics.

This Luncheon and Afternoon of Giving would only reach its fullness if Saint John's "prisluzhniki" gather around Vladyka (as he was simply and affectionately known).  Please contact us if you were one of Saint John's altar servers as described above, and have not yet received personal outreach from our committee.

the setting

The Mark Hopkins Hotel is named for one of the legendary "Big Four" builders of the first transcontinental railroad, whose mansion
originally stood on this site before burning in the aftermath of the 1906 earthquake. Its rich history and grand architecture, a combination of
French chateau and Spanish ornamentation, has earned it the distinction as a San Francisco Designated Historical Landmark.
Twelve presidents, countless royals, heads of state, dignitaries and celebrities have been received within its ballroom, the Peacock Court.
In short, the quintessential San Francisco experience.

the history
Luncheon guests will first be welcomed to a Cocktail Reception in the Hotel's Room of the Dons.  An artistic and architectural treasure,
Room of the Dons boasts nine murals depicting a history of early California in a fantasy rendition of international communities
in a rich medley of reds, blues, and browns against a backdrop of gold leaf. The storied 7-foot-high panels were painted by
famed California artists Maynard Dixon (Master Painter of the American West) and Frank van Sloun (American Realist).
the neighborhood
The InterContinental Mark Hopkins San Francisco sits high atop California Street at the crest of Nob Hill, celebrated as one of

the san francisco experience
The San Francisco Cable Car - a National Historic Landmark and a symbol of this great city.  No experience is more uniquely San Francisco than a ride on a cable car.  And can't get any easier to ride a San Francisco Cable Car than from the InterContinental Mark Hopkins - the California line runs right past the Hotel - just look for the brown-and-white cable car sign post one block down and hop on!  Ride down California Street to Chinatown, Financial District, Downtown/Civic Center, and the Embarcadero/Ferry Building.
